THURSDAY AUGUST 17, 2000

You're just in time to catch the tail end of Denver's brand-new film festival THE SUPER-EIGHT SIDE-SHOW. The two-night festival wraps up tonight beginning at 8 p.m. sharp at The Bug Theater with short films from all over the world. The only link between the movies? They were all shot on Super-8. If you're not a film buff and you haven't been introduced to the eccentric beauty of Super-8 movie making, this festival serves as a decent introduction. The festival is presented by The Brainbox. Call 303-863-9235 for more information. Chris J. Magyar

FRIDAY AUGUST 18, 2000

Nietzsche thought that order sprung from chaos, and a whole slew of local photographers are trying to organize around that principle. The THIRD EYE STUDIO AND GALLERY PHOTOGRAPHY COLLECTIVE is holding an opening celebration for their amalgam of local sharpshooters from 7 p.m. to midnight at 214 Santa Fe Drive. The people in charge, Erik Mart and Melissa Nord, assure us that Denver art denizens will be amazed by the sheer number and diversity of the contributors. This town might not need any more numbers, but we could sure as hell use some diversity. Let the chaos begin. CJM

SATURDAY AUGUST 19

Bobby Black is in da house! The CENTRAL WRESTLING ORGANIZATION (CWO) will be tearing up the National Western Complex, and all bets are off. Jake The Snake Roberts, The Insane Clown Posse, and Sonny Ono are just some of the special guests who will add to the pyrotechnicality of the premiere independent wrestling league's show ... but in our mind, the main attraction is our own tattooed food critic, the Reverend Bobby Black, who will be a guest referee for the following matchup: Ringside Ryan (CWO's most hated commentator) vs. The Magnum Man (CWO's most hated promoter and head of The Family). If either opponent resorts to their usual underhanded tactics, The Rev will hold one or both accountable in his usual brutal way. Tickets can be had through TicketMaster or by stopping by Bonaroo Tattoo. CJM

SUNDAY AUGUST 20, 2000

Well, most people think this is on Saturday, but we'll be anal and call it Sunday. The MOONLIGHT CLASSIC BIKE RIDE will be launching from the steps of the Capital Building at midnight, the beginning of Sunday morning. The event is cleverly sponsored by Cat's Eye, the manufacturer of fine bicycle headlights and lamps. Things can get crazy in the dark ... on a bike ... CJM

MONDAY AUGUST 21, 2000

Dr. Dre, Eminem, Snoop Dogg and Ice Cube will turn Denver upside down (if they can) with their shows at Fiddler's Green. Apparently they think one night isn't enough to let the city go ‘UP IN SMOKE.' For hardcore hip-hop lovers this is a show you can't miss. Dr. Dre claims he was put on this planet to make hip-hop music. It's also been said that he's the best rap producer who has ever lived. The thing is, Dr. Dre can actually back it up. He produced one of the first rap albums to ever go platinum in the West Coast with JJ FAD's Supersonic. He went on, put out Snoop (at that time still Doggy) Dogg and Warren G. He was behind 2Pac and the Notorious B.I.G., all artists that have claimed fame even outside the rap/hip-hop scene. His latest big discovery was Eminem, known as the first true white hip-hop artist, and now he puts it all together in one tour. He calls it Up in Smoke, and you know what? If you put all those artists and their fans together in one place, I wouldn't be surprised if that really happened … Valerie van de Flier

STATIC X's goal in life (or music) is simple: to make music that could take the energizing effect of techno, the aggressiveness of a guitar-laden frenzy and the moody overtones common to the goth/industrial underground and mold it into something unique creating a sound the band calls rhythmic trancecore. Their (maybe a little strange) method worked and they got signed by a major label. Their shows are extreme to watch, maybe like mini-raves going on, making it a party every single time. By doing that they got a big and diverse following before they were signed and now they continue, just on a bigger scale. INCUBUS seems to be another band that fits into that picture pretty well, too. After they toured with Limp Bizkit, Ozzy Osbourne, Black Sabbath and Korn, they wrote a new album for eight weeks and then had a collective nervous breakdown. No matter what the reasons are for those bands' strange behavior, the fact is that they can give a hell of a show, which they'll absolutely do at the Fillmore. VvdF

WEDNESDAY AUGUST 23, 2000

If there's an artist that's standing the test of time, it's TRACY CHAPMAN. She's been recording and performing for well over a decade now, and is still going strong. Her newest record Telling Stories was made by challenging herself through the entire process. The product is another great record by the same producer as her first two CDs, both multi-platinum Grammy Award winners. Tracy grew up in Cleveland, Ohio, and started making up songs when she was eight. She received a scholarship for a prestigious Connecticut school and graduated as an anthropologist from Tufts University. Her performances on the streets of Harvard Square and in nightclubs gained her more than her scholarship, though. That's where she got the music industry's attention, and that's what's bringing her to Denver once again to play at Red Rocks Amphitheatre. VvdF

THURSDAY AUGUST 24, 2000

Legendary rock band THE WHO is on tour once again. Since their start in the early ‘60's, there haven't been many bands who kept coming back together like they did. This summer they're doing a North American tour. In the almost 40 years of their existence, a lot has changed. Since all four original members had very different personalities, their shows often ended in major on stage collisions. In other words, if you go to this show, watch out for equipment being thrashed and people falling off stage. That's what used to happen in the old days at least. But who knows? Maybe they've grown up in all those years. Maybe they realize now that having to get new instruments for every show is a waste of money. And maybe touring with a new drummer (again), this time ex-Beatle Ringo Starr's son Zak Starkey, will keep them together for a little longer. Who knows? The only thing I know is no matter what happens, seeing The Who live in Colorado will be an unforgettable experience. VvdF

FRIDAY AUGUST 25, 2000

RALPH STEADMAN, the splashy British author and illustrator, is making a mark again at William Havu Gallery on 1040 Cherokee St. The artist will be presenting his prints along with those of John Buck, Enrique Chagoya, Roy De Forest, Red Grooms, Luis Jimenez and Betty Woodman for a show called Select Prints from Shark's Inc. premiering tonight from 6-9 p.m. The show will run through October 7, and there will be a panel discussion August 26 from 2-4 p.m. For more information, visit www.oneoverone.com or call 303-893-2360. SATURDAY AUGUST 26, 2000

The United Nations has warned that up to 13.4 million people in East Africa face starvation within weeks. Extreme food shortages, drought conditions and a war are the main reasons for this possible tragedy to happen. More than half of those people at risk, including 1.4 million children under the age of five, live in Ethiopia. The Ethiopian Drought Relief Aid of Colorado is organizing an ETHIOPIAN CULTURAL EVENT to raise money. The Event will be held at the Boettcher Concert Hall at 7 p.m. At the event various Ethiopian artists, such as dancers and musicians will make their appearance. Ticket prices range between $30 and $50. Tickets can be purchased with Ticketmaster, who is one of the sponsors of the event, so this time the outrageous service charges will actually have a meaning. Other sponsors are The Denver Performing Arts Complex, KOSI 101 and Qualimage. If you can't make it to the event, you can still contribute by sending a check to: Ethiopian Drought Relief Fund, 901 E. 17th Ave., Denver, 80218. VvdF

SUNDAY AUGUST 27, 2000

Remember MTV's Liquid Telelvision? Every Sunday night the most bizarre and twisted cartoons on television shared an hour of screen space to disgust and delight genre fans of all ages. Well it's gone now, replaced by a re-run of TRL or something, but you can find its bastard child on the web, at WWW.DISTANT-CORNERS. COM. Definitely for the DSL/Cable set, this ultra-sophisticated site houses original movies, music, and games for the horror, sci-fi, and cult lover. It's got all the bizarre, unexplained twists and insanely complicated navigational tools you'd expect from a site that aspires to crack open the mind of H.P. Lovecraft (even though he's dead ... all the more reason to crack it open). Go on, be subversive. CJM

MONDAY AUGUST 28, 2000

Besides distilling a fine whiskey, Jack Daniels tries to please people in other ways, too. With parties ... surprise parties actually. In 24 cities around the U.S. they'll be the host to a great music event. This year, next to having a fun show in your own city, there's also a chance for you to win a trip to Lynchburg for a private outdoor concert, the end of September, for Jack's 150th birthday party. The JACK DANIELS SURPRISE PARTY will be held at the Gothic Theatre. Last year they brought Marcy Playground. Who the special guest of this year's party will be is still a secret. So if you have a wide music taste, are over 21 and in for a good time, the Gothic is the place to be. VvdF

TUESDAY AUGUST 29, 2000

FURTHUR FESTIVAL 2000 smokes into Fiddler's Green featuring The Other Ones (Bob Weir, Mickey Hart, Bruce Hornsby, etc.) and Ziggy Marley. It's sort of a cross between Reggae on the Rocks and the Grateful Dead ... which is to say, choose your weapon: pipe or doobie. If you're just in it for the contact high, a ticket alone will cost you $25-$30 (before service charges). If you're just in it for the music, buy the albums and enjoy these talents sober unlike many bands plumbing the depths of the ‘get high and dance' circuit, these guys are chock full of talent. Besides, you should be saving the really kind bud for Phish. CJM

WEDNESDAY AUGUST 30, 2000

Old school metal fans, here's your chance. A tour with three of the most famous names in the metal scene around the world will be passing through Denver. IRON MAIDEN, QUEENSRYCHE AND HALFORD (yes … he finally named his band after himself) will be rocking at Red Rocks. While Iron Maiden and Queensryche are household names around the world, Halford is a relatively new one. After his departure from Judas Priest, Rob Halford tried to find work outside the metal scene. While his first new project (Fight) completely flopped, the second one, named Two, did an okay job in the industrial music scene (thanks to the efforts of Trent Reznor on the production). The two projects disappointed his old fans, though. Now he's returned to his roots. He's back in metal and better than ever. These three bands together should be capable of turning the Rockies upside down. Don't forget to bring your earplugs. VvdF
