Get Out!

THURSDAY SEPTEMBER 14, 2000

Set against a backdrop of scandal and society in the antebellum South, "PARADE" is the latest Tony Award-winning musical from famed director Harold Prince. Scheduled to run until September 24 at the fabulous Temple Buell theater, this is (finally) a big-ticket musical that won't disappoint, bore, or annoy you. --Chris J. Magyar

FRIDAY SEPTEMBER 15, 2000

There's very little to say about the progenitors of "The Sweater Song" and "Buddy Holly" except this: mark my words, WEEZER will be huge again. Remember how long it took the Barenaked Ladies to get from "If I Had A Million Dollars" to "One Week"? Same story here. See them now, while it's cheap. At the Ogden for one night only. --CJM

SATURDAY SEPTEMBER 16, 2000

Michelle Baldwin, the creator of BURLESQUE AS IT WAS, suggests, "Retro doesn't have to mean some '80's night at a dance club-we're talking 1880's with some of our acts." Burlesque is a troupe dedicated to the revival of old time cabaret, vaudeville, dancing and general showmanship, a sort of Catskills campground right here in Colorado. This year's show, "Around the World in 80 Girls," will play to a packed house at the Gothic Theater. Jam yourself in there and gape at the fire dancing, live music, and of course, girls girls girls! This gives "vintage" a whole new meaning. --CJM

SUNDAY SEPTEMBER 17, 2000

Today is the last chance for you to see the current exhibition at GALLERY SINK. The exhibition is called "Sex Stories" and features paintings in comic strip format by Jason Appleton. The gallery also features a show called "One Inch Equals One Foot," which is a site-specific installation by Cheryl Bailey. Gallery Sink is located at 2301 W. 30th Ave. --Valerie van de Flier

MONDAY SEPTEMBER 18, 2000

Today is the 30th anniversary of JIMI HENDRIX's untimely death. Drop on your favorite Hendrix record (or, if you're a late bloomer, CD), and wonder why it is that all the guitar heroes have gone away. These days, music media is so obsessed with the lead singer that there might never be another Hendrix (whose singing was as relevant to his genius as Louis Armstrong's croaked notes were to his trumpet expertise). And if you must have a piece of the legend, longtime Hendrix friend and protegé Buddy Miles will be in concert at the Little Bear on September 20. Long live the legend. - CJM

TUESDAY SEPTEMBER 19, 2000

The sweet harmonies of Cooley High seemed doomed to VH1's "Where Are They Now?" In the years since BOYZ II MEN broke through with their sophomore album, the territory they reinvigorated has been plagued with boy bands appealing to young white teenage girls. What the managers of such outfits as N'Sync and the Backstreet Boys realized was the commercial appeal of thickly layered harmonies on a backdrop of Motown soul. What they missed was the Love, the Barry White, the sexual appeal of such a genre. Boyz II Men still gets her motor purring, and his juices flowing, and everybody's nightgown slinky. With Luther Vandross, this concert makes for a can't-miss date. At Fiddler's Green. --CJM

WEDNESDAY SEPTEMBER 20, 2000

He started out playing in high school bands and recorded several albums with others before he started his solo career. NEIL YOUNG has been switching from being a solo artist to being in a group a lot. After being solo for a while he teamed up and became a part of Crosby Stills Nash and Young. By now he's solo again, and that'll be the way he'll perform in Denver tonight. --VvdF

THURSDAY SEPTEMBER 21, 2000

Any impression you might have about ROCKAPELLA is only half-right. If you know them as the crazy kids' singers who entertained on "Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego?" ... there's still a touch of zany showmanship in the group. If you know them as the cheesy quartet who hammed it up in Spike Lee's Do It A Cappella ... they can still belt out "Sixty Minute Man" and "Under the Boardwalk" with the best of them. If you know them as the obscure Japanese group whose releases aren't available here ... get ready for a surprise. The best a cappella group (that means no instruments at all to you guitar-heads) in the country has finally received some label backing, and you can rush out to any record store to discover the joys of beatbox meets barbershop meets blues meets Boyz II Men. But the best way to enjoy the miracle of vocal acrobatics is to see them live, at Colorado College in the Springs, and just soak in the love. Cynicism is overrated anyway. --CJM

FRIDAY SEPTEMBER 22, 2000

If you have a couple of extra C-notes in your pocket, you are in a charitable mood and have been wondering as some of the rest of us have, "What is up with the ever elusive Todd Park Mohr?" then the place to be this evening is the Gothic Theater for the River Reach Youth Initiative Annual Fundraiser. The front man for international recording artists BIG HEAD TODD & THE MONSTERS is all but guaranteed to make an appearance at this charity event as the Colorado-based band donates their live performance for the second year in a row to benefit at-risk youth. The event this year is themed 'sunset rendezvous' and is sponsored by Guinness Bass Import Company and catered by Panache. The evening will include a live auction featuring an autographed Terrell Davis jersey, a Big Head Todd guitar and works of art by Denver artist Malcolm Farley. Also slated is an award ceremony for role model of the year, this year being presented to Denver City Councilwoman Happy Haynes. Wrapping up the evening's festivities is the private concert performance by Big Head Todd & the Monsters featuring some of the new material from their upcoming album to be released in winter 2001. Tickets for the benefit are $150- $250 V. I. P. and are only available at 303- 477-0379 or www.riverreach.org --Jessica Vogelgesang

SATURDAY SEPTEMBER 23, 2000

DJs from all over the world, such as Juan Atkins from Detroit, Sam Mollison from the U. K. and many others will be featured at tonight's dance party "COOL WORLD." This party is being organized by the same people who gave you Eargasm 2000. With these parties they are trying to give Denver a glimpse of the roots of dance music. Ticket prices vary from $20 in limited pre-sale to $30 at the door. They are available at several record stores around town and online at www.acteva.com/go/planetx --VvdF

SUNDAY SEPTEMBER 24, 2000

Even though they're from the U. K., they can't really be called Britpop. ELASTICA is probably one of the most prominent bands in the '90's U. K. Independent scene. Singer Justine Frischmann used to play in an early incarnation of Suede and had close connections to Blur. When Suede decided they didn't want to work with Justine anymore, she placed ads in the paper asking for band members. That worked out pretty well. We haven't heard from them for a while, but they are touring again and will hit Denver at the Bluebird. --VvdF

MONDAY SEPTEMBER 25, 2000

Ever been caught by surprise? Didn't know how to show the world that surprise? Log on to www.emotioneric.com and learn what real surprise looks like. Eric is just a regular guy with a regular face, but that hasn't stopped him from sharing with the world all the wonderful emotions a man can have-such as complacency, senile dementia, intense Playstation face, and "Can't Sleep ... Clowns Will Eat Me." Sure, it's a waste of time, but you'll be that much more prepared to don the correct expression when constipated. What else is the web for? --CJM

TUESDAY SEPTEMBER 26, 2000

It's impossible to escape public broadcasting. One tale our intrepid pioneers brought back from Burning Man was that the only radio station one could pick up on the playa was NPR. Likewise, no matter how remote your abode, or how weak your rabbit ears, a PBS station is guaranteed to come through clean and clear. Which means two things: you've seen Antiques Roadshow, and you've seen "RIVERDANCE." I can't vouch for the impact of a live Antiques Roadshow, but there's no doubt that "Riverdance" wasn't meant to be experienced via the half-hearted camera work of an underpaid PBS employee, so hike down to Colorado Springs to gander at the stomping live. --CJM

WEDNESDAY SEPTEMBER 27, 2000

They started out as a college band after they heard each other play in their dorm rooms. They practiced in the dorm lounge and recorded their first demos on four-track recorders. Somehow the effort paid off and now they sell out every venue they play at. They use the strangest stage props to make the shows interesting for the people, such as a flying hot dog. Their first tour ever started in Colorado. Now PHISH is coming back here again, so buy your tickets fast before they're sold out. --VvdF
