Get Out!

THURSDAY, OCTOBER 12, 2000

You've read all about this year's DENVER INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL (or have you? Page 13), so now it's time to check out the opening night gala, with a showing of David Mamet's newest film, State and Main, starring Alec Baldwin, Sarah Jessica Parker, Philip Seymour Hoffman, William H. Macy and David Paymer. The movie is about a film crew descending upon a small Vermont town, and sounds similar in tone to Mamet's previous film foray, Wag the Dog. It's only $25 to attend the premiere and the ensuing party, or, if you're feeling really ambitious, $59 to get a ticket to all three main events at the festival (opening night, an evening with Sean Penn, and closing night with Shirley MacLaine, the current incarnation).

FRIDAY, OCTOBER 13, 2000

Okay, so it's Friday the 13th. And it's October. And it's the year 2000. And it just happens to be the night of a full moon. For safety's sake, you'd better stay indoors after the sun goes down (or, if you're like most of our readers, it's time to get that special outfit on and reach new heights in public drunken displays of affection). For daytime fun, check out the BIKE COMPETITION at 3 p. m. behind Conoco on Auraria Parkway, a quarter mile south of Speer. The flatland competition will feature cash prizes and the best riders in Colorado, and it is absolutely free to spectators. For more information, call 303-837-8055.

SATURDAY, OCTOBER 14, 2000

Who needs the Playboy Mansion? There's a phat pajama dance party rolling into Colorado to curb all your nightie fantasies. SILK, presented by Futuregirl Entertainment, will feature the DJ stylings of DJ ESP, DJ Macguyver, Jonny Bong, Ax's, James Steven, and David Seied (Filo). Tickets are $20 presale and $30 at the door. Only 1,000 tickets are available at Soul Flower (114 S. Broadway) in Denver and The Root (1360 College) in Boulder. For more information, call 303-674-5071.

SUNDAY, OCTOBER 15, 2000

Today is the last day to enjoy NAN DESU KAN, Colorado's largest convention of all things anime. The event actually starts October 13 at the Sheraton Denver West, in Lakewood, and features 24 hour video showings, gaming rooms, competitions and activities all related to the art of Japanese animation. The floor will feature enough tables of merchandise to make any anime-phile drool. Registration for the weekend is $35. For more information, contact genkiden-ki@hotmail.comor visit the web: www.ndk.cc

MONDAY, OCTOBER 16, 2000

This is not, I repeat, not your grandmother's bingo night. One of Denver's most popular gay clubs, Club Bent, opens up its floor every Monday night for DRAG QUEEN BINGO, a drunken party hosted by Alexandra Winters and Chamblee Tucker (two of the best improv comedians in Denver at any price). Only $6 gets you enough cards to last the night. Be ready for plenty of audience participation (orgasmic howling, liberal cursing, pathetic heckling) and oooh ... aaah ... fabulous prizes. I myself managed to win $25 worth of free drinks, guaranteeing a return visit. Straight men be careful-- there is a strip bingo round, and it's usually the men with feminine companionship who are cajoled into dropping trou for the event.

TUESDAY, OCTOBER 17, 2000

This is your last chance to catch SPIKE & MIKE'S FESTIVAL OF TWISTED ANIMATION at the Bluebird Theater. The show has traveled the world to compile some of the most disgusting, non-PC, over-the-top animated shorts ever created. Not for the faint of heart, the easily offended, or (truth be told) the sober. Only $7 will win you the chance to enjoy the adventures of No Neck Joe, to marvel at the evil deeds of helium balloons, and to finally find out what happens to bowling pins that don't obey the ten commandments.

WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 18, 2000

One of the all-time comedy classics of the stage premieres tonight at the Ricketson Theatre in the DCPA. "THE SHOW OFF" by George Kelly is widely considered to be the acme of American comedy-- a story about a fast-talking dreamer and a down-to-earth workingman who clash in the now-familiar odd couple way. Tickets are $23-$36. For more information, call 303-893-4100.

THURSDAY, OCTOBER 19, 2000

It's always nice to see a band during the height of its fifteen minutes of fame (even if the tickets are more expensive that way). Such is the position enjoyed by the KOTTONMOUTH KINGS who will play the Ogden to a very energetic crowd tonight. If you haven't heard of them, you probably wouldn't be into their music, since every radio format even close to the blend of reggae, alt-rock and hip-hop they play has promoted the hell out of them for the better part of a year.

FRIDAY, OCTOBER 20, 2000

"This land is your land, this land is my land..." Yep, everyone's tapped their toes to the folksy stylings of American great Woody Guthrie. But the true American would rather tap toes to Woody's loony son ARLO GUTHRIE, the progenitor of Alice's Restaurant and gatekeeper to counterculture at large. See the first man to rhyme 'pickle' with 'motorcycle' at the Boulder Theater tonight for only $23.50.

SATURDAY, OCTOBER 21, 2000

You've heard of Meals On Wheels. Now get ready for Art On Wheels as AUTOMOBILE, an interactive art 'happening' rolls into town. Opening at Ironton tonight, the event focuses on Chris Thunblom's 1985 Toyota pickup truck, a rather unorthodox piece to anchor an artistic event. The art of the truck cannot really be described, only experienced. To find out how to enjoy it, call Thunblom at 720-870-5727 or Lincoln Phillips at 720- 231-6721.

SUNDAY, OCTOBER 22, 2000

The whole hullabaloo around the Lilithization of women's music has lumped a lot of good female musicians (Liz Phair, Sarah McLachlan, Bic Runga, Lucinda Williams) together with some very tepid performers (Jewel, Jewel, Jewel). The perception in the backlash is that female folk singers are weak-minded crooners with big boobs and bad teeth. This is very unfair to the diamonds in the rough, such as DAR WILLIAMS, who is a genuine folk talent appearing at the Boulder Theater tonight. For a taste of real music, visit www.darwilliams.com

MONDAY, OCTOBER 23, 2000

The recent resurgence of Celtic rock has produced many pretenders and only a few who can do it right. SEVEN NATIONS is one of the bands that's staying true to the school (unlike the increasingly wimpy Corrs) and finally gaining the notoriety they deserve. Touring in sup-port of a new self-titled album, you can catch the lads at the Fox Theatre in Boulder tonight. For more information, visit the slick website at www.sevennations.com

TUESDAY, OCTOBER 24, 2000

There is one show every decade that makes Broadway sort of cool. In the '80's, it was "Phantom of the Opera" (with "Les Mis" running a close second). Hard to believe, but knowing all the lyrics to "Music of the Night" used to be hip. For the '90's, the handsdown winner was "RENT" (sorry "Riverdance"), a rock-and-roll musical that put good hairstyles and pop music back on the Great White Way. The show opens tonight at the Temple Buell for those who want to catch the tunes while they're still cool. Beware, though, in five years this show will look like moldy cheese just like every other Broadway megahit.

WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 25, 2000

One of the signs of the apocalypse is the fact that Nashville, Tennessee, has a professional hockey team. Now I know that the AVALANCHE aren't exactly an ancient NHL presence, but at least Denver's got some hockey history (especially when you consider the rivalry between the righteous Colorado College Tigers and the evil Denver University Pioneers), and our franchise has Quebecois roots. Even our hall-of- fame goalie has a funny French name. So head down to the Pepsi Center and cheer against not only the Nashville Predators, but every southern hick hockey team that's joined the circuit in recent years. Go Canada!
