When bizarre musical combinations hit you out of left field, you're almost
obligated to go check it out live just for curiousity's sake. A short while
ago, the preeminent a cappella group The Persuasions released an instruments-free
album of Frank Zappa covers. And if that's not enough, they followed it up
with another album of Grateful Dead covers. That's right--two artists responsible
for changing the way instruments are used, covered by a group who never touches
an instrument on stage. Tonight at the Gothic. Gape in wonder.

Congratulations to all who are making the trek up to Telluride for the International
Experimental Cinema Expo. Once you've braved traffic, snow, and the endless
succession of mindless country radio, you'll really be ready for some thought-provoking
film. Tonight is the first of four full days of the weirdest stuff you'll
ever see on the silver screen. Enjoy!

With the big day falling on Tuesday this year, tonight seems to be the unofficial
Halloween party night. You can find a bazillion things to do in Denver by
flipping to the calendar, but here's a few choice cuts happening outside the
Mile High City for those with patient designated drivers. In Boulder, the
Funkin Pumpkin dance party will light it up with Robert Miles and Adam X.
It is a masquerade, so go in style. For more information, call 303-575-1306
or 303-575-1232. Also in Boulder, Cabaret Diosa will give your Halloween a
latin dance flavor at the Boulder Theatre with "Ritual de los Muertos"Ńa battle
with the forces of darkness including bizarre costumes, elaborate sets and
incredible special effects. And finally, just a little extra gas money will
get you to Ward, where you can enjoy an outdoor (dress warm) concert with
Sci-Fi Uterus, Winona Righteous, and The Mysterikon Prophets from Mystery
Sandbox Theater. This strange blend of progressive techno and experimental
music should leave your head appropriately befuddled and your body delightfully
shaken. For more information, visit
www.grantrproductions.com or

You've got to love it when somebody puts an incredible line-up together for
an event, and then the money you spend to see it goes to a worthwhile charity.
Such is the case with "An Evening of Caring" at the Gothic tonight. For starters,
your $60 ticket ($100/couple) goes to benefit the 20th Annual Day of Caring
for Breast Cancer Awareness on May 12, 2001. In return, you get to see (deep
breath) music by Lannie Garrett and Ellyn Rucker, a fashion show by Brooks
Ltd. and Cutter & Buck, a dance performance from the world-famous Cleo Parker
Robinson Dance Ensemble, and live performances from Marca Cassity, Ciria,
Dear Marsha, Monni Janzen, Barbara Lynn and Wendy Woo. Greg Moody (the bow-tied
television personality and entertainment critic) will MC, and you don't even
have to break out the formal wear. You do have to be older than 21 (cash bar!
yippee!). For more information, call Sue Miller at 303-239-3307.

Here's a good warm-up for the freakiest day of the yearŃPromethean Theatre
presents an artistic free-for-all called Freak Train at the Bug Theatre. Freak
Train is an invitation for spoken word, music, dance, or whatever you can
do in five minutes given a stage and a captive audience. Performers sign up
at the event and do their thing first come first serve. The show starts at
7:30 p.m. and only costs $6. For more information, call the Bug at 303-477-9984.

So you can't dress up in a diaper and go door-to-door asking for candy anymore
without getting arrested. (If you do anyway, more power to you.) The good
news is that virtually every bar, club, and music venue in the state has a
special event planned tonight. For us to select one would be as impossible
as naming our favorite song by The Beetles. Check out our calendars, make
a selection, and go have a good timeŃwork week be damned! The only reason
to stay home is if your home is equipped with a keg and a few dozen party-animal
friends. Happy Halloween!

Today is the first day of our month-long contest: bring us Ken Hopper's autograph.
Who is Ken Hopper? Well, he's a mysterious chapŃall we really know about him
is that he does something with "distributed systems management" and that he
has way too much fun with web cam technology. We believe his whereabouts are
somewhere in Chicago. Our clue to you is that, with a little search on the
web, you can find a detailed schedule of Ken's day. For example, today from
8-9 a.m. Ken will be enjoying the "CIC Video Mega Conference." The first reader
to bring us Ken Hopper's autograph will get their picture in the paper and
a homemade plaque. Just be careful not to pick up a restraining order along
the way. Good luck!
Thursday November 2, 2000
Not long ago, most people assumed the Stone Temple Pilots were dead for good,
broken up by drugs much the way STP contemporaries Alice In Chains fizzled.
Lo and behold, Scott Weiland did the impossible and sobered up (we think),
made up with his bandmates, and resurrected the band that's never got the
respect it deserves for creating pop out of grunge. Appearing tonight at the
Magness Arena with Godsmack and Disturbed.
Friday November 3, 2000
Boulder is opening its doors to kitsch. Art & Soul Gallery hosts its grand
opening celebration tonight from 6-9 p.m., featuring installations from a
wide variety of contemporary artists, including famed "dumpster diver" Leo
Sewell and portrait artist Ries Niemi. A portion of the evening's sales will
go to benefit the Arts and Humanities Assembly of Boulder County, which provides
leadership, resources and funding for all those wacky artists in Boulder.
For more information, call 303-544-5803.
Saturday November 4, 2000
Hannah House isn't the only dark movie that's been filmed in Colorado lately
(see p. 13). Local celebrity and ex-Modern Drunkard editor Frank Rich has
directed a punk rock '40's noir film called Nixing The Twist, which premieres
tonight at the Bluebird Theatre. The movie is about a pair of professional
assassins (Jimmy and Happy) who are disturbed by a recent trend of jobs that
whack accountants, old ladies, and rockabilly bands. The 16mm movie is loaded
with intrigue and atmosphere, and features cameos and songs from some of Denver's
hottest local acts: King Rat, Hemi Cuda, The Pin Downs, Hammerin' Hanks, The
Swanks, and the ubiquitous Mike V. For more information, call 303-830-9181
or visit surf.to/nixing
Sunday November 5, 2000
Joan Baez, the poster child for civil disobediance and sha-na-na in the '60's,
is still going strong with a stop tonight at the Boulder Theatre. Though not
as prominent as her old folkie pal Bob Dylan in recent years, she remains
for many a living link to times when music did more than please the ears.
Monday November 6, 2000
In the words of Tenswing, our resident CD savant, "With The (International)
Noise Conspiracy's CD Survival Sickness, this group is very able to groove
one minute, then screech and thrash about the next. Imagine this one: you
are on your first date and you slap on track number three, "Smash It Up."
At first listen, your date thinks you are cool, suave and hell, even attractive.
Then, the song picks up tempo and slams your date about with such emotional
force that your new date (and soon to be absessed groupie) thanks you for
the breath of fresh air and begs to be kissed on the first date." What better
place for that first date than at (I)NC's show at the Bluebird tonight? Only
$7, with Blue Tip.
Tuesday November 7, 2000
The current re-mix king of the universe, Fatboy Slim, appears tonight at the
Fillmore. What Moby has done for the art of original techno songwriting, Fatboy
Slim has done for the art of the re-mix. Miss it at your own risk.
Wednesday November 8, 2000
The Squirrel Nut Zippers enjoyed a brief heyday at the very beginning of the
swing dance craze in the mid-'90's, stunning listeners and critics alike with
their authentic big-band sound blended with wicked '90's lyrics on Hot, their
breakthrough album. Since then, nobody's really heard from them and the swing
craze is slowly making its way down to junior-high cool (where trends shrivel
up and die). That doesn't mean the Zippers are any less of a band, though,
and their music deserves to be kept alive, so go out and support the show
tonight at the Boulder TheatreŃat least you'll be jumping, jiving and wailing
to the sounds of kick-ass music.
