One of art's little impossibilities has
always been capturing nature on the two-dimensional
page. David Cook Fine Art, at
1637 Wazee St., will feature some of the
best landscape artists in this century as
"COLORADO AND THE WEST"
opens tonight at 6 p. m. From the intricate
etchings of George Elbert Burr to the surreal
creations of Ross Braught, the show
promises to display the most magnificent
vistas committed to paper in the 1900s.
For more information, call 303-623-8181.
Friday November 10, 2000
Forty bucks will get you a seat in the
Pepsi Center where you can watch Limp
Bizkit, Eminem, Papa Roach and Xzibit
do their angry thang on stage. Sounds like
a good deal, right? Wrong. The real deal
is afterwards, at the incredible club Bash,
where EMINEM will be hosting an
afterparty with his band D-12 and DJ
Chonz. What will it cost you to see the
wife-beater-wearing whitey from Detroit
up close? Only $20 in advance at
Independent Records. Forget the arena ...
step into the pit.

Snow is in the air, which means it's about
time for a new Warren Miller movie. Get
your ski-rack-topped SUV up to Boulder
for Miller's latest powder performance,
RIDE, showing at the Boulder Theater at
3, 6, and 9 p. m. Seeing one of the master's
movies on the big screen is becoming
a snow-hound's version of
Woodstock, so the $13.50 ticket price is
well worth it. For more information, call
303-786-7030.
Sunday November 12, 2000
Tonight, the Bluebird Theater hosts one
of those bands that should be a household
name, but hasn't had the astrological luck
to hit the HUGE time yet. Portland-born
rockers THE DANDY WARHOLS have
crafted dozens of catchy pop tunes, landed
plenty of chart hits, and sold out huge
venues in Europe. And yet you can still
catch them on the cheap. For those who
haven't picked up an album yet, the
Warhols are what you'd get if you put
Oasis and The Wallflowers in a blender
then added plenty of pot and prozac.
Tickets are only $15.
Monday November 13, 2000
So you're about to dash off to work, but
you just can't surrender yourself to
another day of cubicle-bound boredom
without a movie. But who's got time for a
movie, dammit? Well, that's what the
Internet is for, friends. Thanks to the new
short film review site hosted by Stomp
Tokyo, EAT MY SHORTS, you can
find, download, and watch a great movie
in the time it takes to eat breakfast. Just
go to www. stomptokyo. com/ shorts in the
morning and the fine reviewers will help
you out the rest of the way. (Hint: if
words like 'morning' and 'breakfast'
don't apply to your life, you can also
sneak in a few quick films on the company
computer between over-the-shoulder
boss visits).

Tonight: ROCK BOTTOM
REMAINDERS! No, not the filmy
residue left on your mug after a pint at
that 16th Street brewery. It's the filmy
residue of authors masquerading as musicians!
This is your chance to find out if
Dave Barry, Tad Bartimus, Roy Blount
Jr., Michael Dorris, Robert Fulghum,
Kathi Goldmark, Matt Groening, Stephen
King, Barbara Kingsolver, Al Kooper,
Greil Marcus, Dave Marsh, Ridley
Pearson, Joel Selvin, or Amy Tan have as
much talent playing with music key
boards as they do with computer keyboards.
At the Gothic Theater for $50 and
up. ($ 250 includes a meet and greet with
the, er, musicians).
Wednesday November 15, 2000
One of the best ways to show your support
for local music is to attend launch nights,
such as tonight's NEW TALENT
SHOWCASE at Herman's Hideaway. It
can also be one of the most arduous, since
by definition the bands playing are untested
(or unable to gig elsewhere). Well, fear
not, since this NTS has a ringerÑ Eric
Shiveley and the Shivetones will play and
play well, regardless of what their stage
cohorts pull off. For a live music experience,
it doesn't get any less expensive, or
more fulfilling, than this.
Thursday November 16, 2000
So there's still a whole mess of you people
out there who can't get enough bluegrass
music. Well, fine. If you like your
bluegrass with a pronounced country
twang, caravan up to Boulder and check
out BLUEGROUND UNDERGRASS
at the Fox Theater for $7.50. The Atlantabased
group describes its sound as "psychadelic
hick-hop" and draws comparison
to the String Cheese Incident, but
what you're mostly in for is Nashville
banjos and lyrics that can only be sung
with a dreamy grin. Suit yourself.
Friday November 17, 2000
Boulder is opening its doors to kitsch. Art & Soul Gallery hosts its grand
opening celebration tonight from 6-9 p.m., featuring installations from a
wide variety of contemporary artists, including famed "dumpster diver" Leo
Sewell and portrait artist Ries Niemi. A portion of the evening's sales will
go to benefit the Arts and Humanities Assembly of Boulder County, which provides
leadership, resources and funding for all those wacky artists in Boulder.
For more information, call 303-544-5803.
Saturday November 18, 2000
The ever-collectible JOCK STURGES
will be displaying new photographs of
nudes at Camera Obscura Gallery on
1309 Bannock St. Sturges, whose reputation
exploded in the '90s with several
monographs published, will be on hand to
personally autograph copies of his latest
book, Jock Sturges: New Work 1996-
2000. The reception will last from 5: 30-
8: 30 p. m. For more information, call 303-
623-4059.

When Veruca Salt took the world by surprise
in 1994 with American Thighs,
nobody could have predicted that the first
ladies of metal would eventually produce
this: NINA GORDON (one half of the
former female duet) created an album for
14-year-olds who watch "Dawson's
Creek." Louise Post clung to the name
and kept Veruca Salt going with an even
harder edge (a pill that's way too jagged
to swallow), while Louise, apparently,
took her Paul McCartney half of the
songwriting duties and told the world
about all her crushes, one by one. If nothing
else, high school girls will have
something to turn to when they get sick of
the Backstreet Boys, and at least she
writes her own tunes (well-crafted at
that). Tonight at the Bluebird for $15.
Monday November 20, 2000
The third performance (ever) of
"SANTALESS: THE TWELVE
PLAYS OF CHRISTMAS" will take
place at 2 p. m. at the Acoma Center, 1080
Acoma St. A series of holiday-themed
shorts that promise to teach, "Sometimes
simply being present is the best gift we
can give," the plays were written by Erik
Tieze, a regular in the usually annual "A
Christmas Carol" at the DCPA. When
"Tantalus" took over the Center for the
holidays this year, Tieze dashed off the
plays in part to avoid holiday unemployment.
If you can't make it to this world
premiere weekend, don't fret. There will
be special performances on November 25
and December 1-3 that benefit The
Children's LegacyÑ truly a gift worth
giving. For more information, call 303-
623-0524.
Tuesday November 21, 2000
We all know that Joe DiMaggio has gone
to the great upper deck in the sky, so the
question now is, "Where have you gone,
PAUL SIMON?" Apart from a difficult
resurfacing in New York to create the
critically panned musical "The
Capeman" three years ago, the quintessential
songwriter of the late '70s and
early '80s (until Billy Joel stole his torch)
disappeared in the '90s. He's back this
year with You're The One, a good addition
to the Simon songbook (though it
remains to be seen if his relaxed tempos
and quirky lyrics have a place in today's
musical climate). You can catch him
tonight at the Fillmore. Now, whatever
happened to Peter Gabriel?
Wednesday November 22, 2000
Perennial local favorite Robert Dubac has
come home to present "THE MALE
INTELLECT: AN OXYMORON?"
Conceived and premiered here in Denver,
the one-man romantic comedy has
become a nationwide hit, making the
homecoming performances at the
Paramount Theatre even more special for
Dubac. If you've got strong enough sides
to withstand 90 minutes of laughing, and
deep enough pockets to afford the $33-
$43 tickets, make every effort to catch
this show. Dubac is simply magnificent
as he bounces between five different
charactersÑ The Colonel, Jean-Michel,
Old Mr. Linger, Ronnie Cabrezzi and
Fast EddieÑ with alacrity and grace. For
tickets, call 303-830-TIXS.
