STYLEGOOD GIRLS GONE...If the Britney Spears look is sending you into diabetic shock, then you are in need of a little Sugar, the boutique that is. Sugar is the newest addition to the Broadway niche shops and is the desired destination for good girls who go bad. Sista’s (soul not blood) Corby Lee and Jenny Lee match vintage treasures with trendy attire to produce a swagged rocker girl persona. “We’re gonna make a pretty mess out of you” is the store’s mantra and promise. “We have stuff that your parents would see as messy — but you want it because it’s pretty,” Corby Lee said. And Sugar sells all the styles your mother warned you about. “We carry a lot of small companies. Stuff that is made by hip young girls for hip young girls,” Jenny Lee said. Cutting edge lines Serious and Mosquito Head share the walls with girl-powered designs by Space Cow Girl, Tuff Girl, and She Devil. “The must have is a pair of Montegro low rider jeans,” Corby Lee said. “They are funky, low slung—and look awesome on everyone.” Another popular item is the panty set by Doll House which Corby Lee describes as “cute and hoochie-esque.” Sugar has all the necessary accessories too: Colored wigs, belts, bracelets, a nd a make over corner starring glitter makeup by Cookie Puss. “You should come play with us,” Jenny Lee said. But most importantly, as every experienced diva knows, are the shoes- and Sugar has em’. Nana, NYLA, 7Star, DollHouse, and Sugar Shoes are available to make a pretty mess of your feet too. After you have stuffed your shopping bag full of girlie goodies, you will not have to concern yourself with sneaking your superstar duds past the man of the house. “We have items for guys too,” Corby Lee said. Sugar serves up men’s T-shirts, belts, magazines and prints by Lindsey Kuhn. “You don’t have to worry about guilty pleasure here.” So break all the rules- take the afternoon off, grab your favorite vixen friends, and indulge yourself in this sweet shop where girls rule. --Kity Ironton |
