Thursday December 21, 2000

Funky jam band The String Cheese Incident is holding a benefit concert for several local charities tonight at the Boulder Theater. All proceeds will go to charities such as "The Traditional Support Caravan to Big Mountain," which helps Hopi and Dineh families receive much needed basic supplies. The Emergency Family Assistant Association and Boulder Holiday Food Basket charities will also receive part of the show's proceeds. I had a chance to see one of String Cheese's shows from backstage and these guys have just as much fun in the rafters as they do in front of the crowd. Don't miss out on the chance to groove out and help your fellow man. Tickets are $25 each and are available at www.stringcheeseincident.com or the Boulder Theater box office.

Get your holiday groove on when Mr. Kelly Reverb makes an appearance at Rock Island (15th and Wazee) tonight. This Texas-based breakbeat DJ has 12 years of experience under his belt and has worked with such notable artists as DJ Icey, BT, Carl Cox, Kimball Collins and the Jungle Brothers. He also worked on the music for the motion picture Blade starring Wesley Snipes. Come and experience this professional in action for yourself. See if you can keep from tearing up the dance floor to his crazy beats.

Though she was born and raised in North Dakota, Celeste Krenz considers Colorado home. Rightly so: her following has grown tremendously since she moved here in 1990, and is poised to get even bigger with the release of her latest CD, Celeste, on national label Blix Street Records (see review on page 22). She performs tonight at Boulder's cozy Trilogy Lounge.

You're all invited to Angela's going away party at the 15th Street Tavern. Who's Angela? Well, she's one of the Tavern's bartenders and in honor of her departure lots of great acts are lined up for a show tonight. DJ Flip, DJ Dave and DJ Chris Irvin are all spinning for your delights, not to mention Angela's. Get down there early and help send Angela on her way while enjoying some great entertainment.

I know that most people stay home on Christmas Day, but it's a Colorado tradition to head for the hills on the long weekend and ski the season's greetings in fresh powder. For those of you who will be taking in the world-class champagne (snow and beverage) at Steamboat Springs this Christmas, there's a band dutifully playing the night away over at the Tugboat Saloon: The Flow. Part jazz, part Bayou, and even a little bit disco, The Flow is guaranteed to cap your Santa Day off right. Merry Christmas!

So you thought you could sneak in without anyone noticing, Mr. Harper? Wrong! Ben Harper will be playing two dates (tonight and tomorrow night) at the Wheeler Opera House in Aspen. Since many of you were frustrated at not being able to attend his last show here at the Fillmore due to an acute lack of tickets, this is possibly the best opportunity to actually land a seat at one of his electric shows for the next few years.

You're done unwrapping presents and you've had the last leftover that your stomach can hold. It's time for you to get out of the house. Go on down to The Soiled Dove in LoDo for a concert featuring Green Street Majority with Fuzz Chunk and The Suggadaddies. Dance off those extra holiday pounds to the edgy pop of Green Street. Doors open at 8 pm and the show starts at 9 pm.

The weather outside is not the only thing frightful. Everyone who got coal in their stocking is invited to the Bug Theatre, where Evil Santa and his Evil Elves will dispense ... well, we suppose a whole lot of Evil. Also, local band Infinity Waltz will provide music and notorious Denver-filmed action movie Dragon and the Hawk will appear for a rare screening. Tickets are only $7, and the fun begins at 7:30 p.m. Have you been naughty this year? Go get what's coming to you.

We know there's an awful glut of jam bands on the Colorado scene today, but that doesn't mean the talent pool has been entirely diluted. My personal favorite of the jammers, Stir Fried, will play tonight and through New Year's Eve at Quixote's True Blue Café, the home of mountain mish-mash music. They might not have the following of a String Cheese or a Leftover Salmon, but Stir Fried is just as scrumptious. By the way, why do all new-grass bands have food in their names? --CJM

Saturday December 30, 2000
Our poor children. They're our future, you know. And yet, we rear them on the most sentimental politically-correct pap we can find. In the old days, when the Brothers Grimm did their tale-spinning and Aesop got as much play as Homer, children's tales were freaky—full of blood, death, and monsters that would make Wes Craven wet his leather pants. Over time, Grimm Tales became Mother Goose and eventually Rugrats. At least in Russia they held on to the good old days, when children were allowed to learn what 'scary' is. Tonight, at the Shwayder Theatre, you can take the kids to see Baba Yaga and the rest of the Russian Folk Tale baddies during "Lesnie Prokazniki," a rousing reminder of when fairy tales had teeth. Starting at noon. Call 303-321-7144 for more information.

You will have to drive out to Fort Collins, but it will be well worth the effort to see On Second Thought play the Aggie Theater (204 S. College Ave.) tonight. This Colorado band has a groovy, slap-bass sound that has won them a large audience, mainly consisting of college students. They have developed quite a large fan base with a mailing list that hits 38 states. Check out this band for yourself at tonight's 21 and up show starting at 9 pm. Tickets are available through www.ticketweb.com Don't miss out.

(Send the Webmaster Birthday Greetings)

Now that you've recovered from the heinous New Year's hangover, get out and get some culture in your head to make up for all the brain cells you drank away. Mosaics, an art show featuring the works of Michael Rieger, will be displayed at its opening reception tonight 6-9 p.m. at the Goosetown Tavern (3242 Colfax Avenue). The show will be open to the public through February 3. Be there tonight to take in some beautiful mosaics and help to get that grey matter in your head back to work.
