Get Out!

Thursday January 18, 2001

Georgia-based band Jupiter Coyote has good reason to be playing four consecutive dates in Colorado, including tonight's big show at the Bluebird: an old member of JC, David "The Great Rapa" Stevens, left in the early '90s to spend time with his son in Boulder. Since then, he's been known to join the band when they hit Oskar Blues and reinsert his quirky-cool congos for a rare live treat. So check this smarter-than-the-average jam band tonight in Denver, or trek up to Lyons tomorrow or Saturday and hope for The Rapa. --Chris J. Magyar

Brady Lee Stecker presents "Bound By Definition," an art show opening tonight at Cafe Netherworld from 6 to 9 p. m. The show will run in this cyber cafe's halls until January 26, but, as always, it's best viewed on opening night, when the atmosphere is warmest and the beer is cheapest. For more information call Netherworld at 303-861-8638. --CJM

Mile High House represents some of the state's best DJs, and one of the best DJs in their house is Greg Eversoul, a man who has won national acclaim for his tribal beats that inspire a deep-down body thirst for more. His most recent residency stint has been at Club Soma, but tonight he's headlining a special show at Club Vinyl that's primed to be a can't-miss event. Bring cash for the valet-- you won't find any parking left. --CJM

Every Sunday, The Soiled Dove launches local bands for free, and tonight one such band is Breathing Eve, whose new CD hits fine stores this February (and will be diligently reviewed in our next issue). Also appearing are The Good Sirs, The Funkdamentals, Donya River and Bop Skizzum ... maybe even more, as bands are known to hop on the bill last minute for these enjoyable events. Besides, you can't beat free for a ticket price. --CJM

Dust off the old zoot suit and hop in your car. Swing sensations Big Bad Voodoo Daddy are in Ft. Collins tonight and the rest of the week at the Lincoln Center. Don't miss the band that helped forge the new swing movement of the '90s. The show starts at 7: 30 p. m. Call the box office at 970-221-6730 for ticket infor-mation. --Elizabeth Beeson

Looking for something different? The Urban Bush Women bring an always-astounding repertoire of dance, music, and theatre to the Paramount tonight. Founded by Jawole Willa Jo Zollar in 1984, the troupe has been exploring African-American folklore and spiritual traditions in ways that have won acclaim on both coasts and beyond. Tickets range from $19 to $30. --CJM

And now for a band that needs no intro-duction in Colorado: Leftover Salmon. Sure, they're playing all over the place this month, but tonight's gig is a special one for two reasons. First, it's in Steamboat Springs, a perfectly lovely location for Salmon's mountain-inspired jammery. Second, it's free. Yeah, free! The outdoor show starts at the corner of 8th and Lincoln at 6: 30 p. m. Bring your ski outfit-- even if you decide not to hit the slopes during the day, Steamboat Springs isn't known for being particularly warm on January nights. --CJM

Troma, the venerable progenitors of The Toxic Avenger and Tromeo & Juliet, will premiere the latest sickly sweet offering from New Jersey's (we think) only film studio: Terror Firmer. With opening noise by Space Team Electra, and beer flowing like water, the event should be just as raunchy and raucous as befits any Troma release. If you miss it, Sgt. Kabukiman will give you a beatdown you won't forget. --CJM

If your New Year's resolution was to lead a more serene and peaceful life, stay at home and do yoga tonight. If you want to raise some hell, grab $5 and head over to the Bluebird Theater for local punk rock group King Rat, featuring special guests Shrank and St. James Gate. It's a 21-and-over show, so don't forget the IDs. Doors open at 8 p. m. with music starting up at 9 p. m. --EB

Reasons to go to Pueblo are few and far between, so take advantage of The Oblivion, a rave put on by Imago Dei productions and presented by ColoradoRave. com. The party will take place in Pueblo, a town heretofore only known for the State Fair and its resemblance to Albuquerque (that other blight on the front range). DJ Omen headlines, and five members of the www. coloradorave. com corral warm up the tables-- Dubois, DJ Bombay, DJ Danky, DJ Isatope, and Ronja. The best part is that pre-sale tickets are only $6, a rarity in this day and age. Call 303-281-8940 for more information, or pick up tickets at Independent Records (the Colorado Springs branch, not the new Colfax store). --CJM

Hey kids! Do you like hip hop? Well one of the funkiest and most original hip hop groups is coming to the area tonight for a 21 and up show. Catch the Los Angeles-based group Pharcyde at the Fox Theatre for only $15.75. With openers, Ugly Duckling, you won't want to be late to this 9 p. m. show. Not 21 yet? Go to the all ages show tomorrow, same Pharcyde time, same Pharcyde venue. --EB

Remember "The Critic"? It was a semi-successful venture featuring Jon Lovitz as a fat, balding movie critic, animated by the same studio and producer as "The Simpsons." Well, after being bounced around three networks and tossed in and out of syndication, the show has found new life on www. shockwave. com, where new episodes are currently being streamed for your viewing pleasure. Perhaps the show will find new life on the Internet, and perhaps Shockwave will perform another public service and resurrect "The Tick." Now that's a show I miss. --CJM

One of the most disappointing breakups in the '90s was Jane's Addiction's sudden dissolve. Out of the ashes have come some good projects, but the best may be drummer Stephen Perkins' ongoing jam band Banyan, which has featured such musicians as fellow Jane's alum Mike Watt, Nels Cline, Flea, Buckethead, Rob Wasserman, and Bad Azz. The band's first album received mixed reviews at best, but Perkins and Watt have been a treat to see live regardless of what lineup they're in, and tonight's show at Quixote's should be no different. If you've got other plans for this Tuesday night, check out concert calendar-- Banyan's all over the place this month. --CJM

Groovy, baby! It's Brit-pop night at the Snake Pit, and in addition to all the mojo you can handle, Sportique is presenting a swingin' fashion show by Boss. Pop art will be provided by locals Danica Bomar and Jack Jensen, and there will be a raffle for a big bad power scooter, so you can run over all the 10-year-olds in the neighborhood. If you haven't been to the Pit yet, and you've been waiting for an excuse to check it out, here you go. Tell them Austin sent you. --CJM
