Get Out!

Thursday February 1, 2001

Phish bassist Mike Gordon is a one-man multimedia empire. Aside from his gig with the world's leading (albeit semi-defunct) jam band, Gordon has written a book, Mike's Corner, and now made a movie called Outside Out, which screens tonight at the Boulder Theater at 7 pm a nd 9:30 pm The flick stars Colonel Bruce Hampton as a guitar teacher who tries to get his student to play on instinct. The premise sounds bland, but the movie itself is a parade of quirks in editing, imagery, and twisted humor. And, of course, the soundtrack rocks. Only $5. --Chris J. Magyar

Leg broken? Spine fused? Stuck on the mountain, breathing your last? Maybe you should crawl on down to the Little Bear in Evergreen and take a life-giving shot of the Blues, courtesy of Shemekia Copeland and Corey Harris. Copeland, touring behind her well-received album Wicked, can be counted on to rattle the rafters. The show starts at 8 p.m.. Tickets are $10, and no one under 21 gets in the door.

Internet entertainment sites are engaged in a battle royale to see who can produce the most offensive politically incorrect content on the web.Romp.com might not be the outright winner, but it's certainly a strong contender. Aiming squarely at the Maxim reader (single men with a raunchy sense of humor), Romp produces games, animated shorts and a weekly pinup girl complete with an interview and Quicktime movie of the photo shoot. (Thus, this site's entry falling on a Monday.) Features like Bill & Ted's (Clinton and Kennedy's) Excellent Adventures, Tit Talk, and the game Avoid Commitment are entertaining in their adolescence, as long as you have the patience for the slowest-loading site this side of www.mtv.com. --CJM

Closer might not, at first glance, seem like the ideal date play. However, this intense examination of love and infidelity offers a great opportunity for Mars and Venus to collide, and after tonight's 8 pm performance, sex expert and psychotherapist Carolyn Bushong will conduct a discussion on the nature of relationships, and why humans are so ready to screw them up. There will be plenty of wine and cheese to loosen lips, as it were.--CJM

Tonight's the first of three Pops at the Ritchie concerts, combining mid-century musicians with the Colorado Symphony Orchestra. The opening show packs quite a wallop, with The Tempations and The Spinners taking the stage. Catering can be provided, or you can bring your own food. These once-in-a-lifetime concerts don't come cheap, however--it'll take at least $115 to get you into the Ritchie Center, or $1,750 for a table big enough for eight people.--CJM

In the past, the Bell Rays have been likened to "being kicked in the balls by James Brown." Though I'm not sure if I'd like that experience, I can guarantee you that I'd love the soul-filled experience of a Bell Rays show. If you haven't caught them yet, head down to the 15th Street Tavern (623 15th Street) where they will be playing tonight, along with bands Hemi Cuda and The Bottle Rockers. Have fun, but just be sure to wear your jock strap, O.K.?--EB

Get ready to rock and/or roll. Venerable thrash outfit Pantera is in town tonight and ready to tear the freakin' roof off of the Denver Coliseum. Dimebag Darrell and friends have been making honest-to-Priest heavy metal since before 1992, when Cowboys From Hell became the first metal album to have a single--"Mouth for War"--start at No. 1. Expect a righteous, headbanging frenzy. One number of theirs you probably won't hear: the Dallas Stars' theme music, played before every game at Reunion Arena. There are some places that even scary metal guys don't go. Tickets run $27; call TicketWeb for more information. --CJM
