Thursday March 1, 2001 Come help local composer Christopher Mohr celebrate the release of a music drama that took him over 20 years to compose. The release party for his album, From the Realm of the Shadow, takes place today at the Theater Café (1335 Curtis in the Denver Performing Arts Complex) from 4 to 7 pm Mohr is one of the only classical composers to be signed to an international label. The music deals with Mohr's personal ghosts of the past and emotional struggles. The opera covers a myriad of musical styles such as medieval, baroque, romantic, early twentieth century, Indian, Middle Eastern and folk, among others. The opening is free of charge. Snacks and drinks will be served and Eva Cernik will perform a dance to a short excerpt from Mohr's piece. Mohr will also be on hand for any questions. --Elizabeth Beeson Friday March 2, 2001 What's the point of an awards issue, really? Especially in theatre-- we bestow all sorts of accolades upon performances that will never happen again. What if you missed them? How could you possibly recapture the magic of that moment? Here's a start: The Bug Theatre (theatre of the year) presents On The Verge, a comedy starring Gary Culig (actor of the year), Feloniz Salas (actress of the year), McPherson Horle (one half of the Cutest Couple) and Lindsey Pierce. This comedy about three Victorian ladies trekking across an uncharted wilderness is guaranteed to shine. On The Verge opens tonight, and costs a mere $15. --Chris J. Magyar Saturday March 3, 2001 Enter my child, into a world of art, music, cigars, food and booze. No, it's not a dream, it's Artopia, and it's tonight. Artopia offers up a sampling of the very best Denver has to offer. Complete with performance art, claymation shorts and a fashion show, the event compacts a year's worth of art into one night. Artists such as Julie Greason and Steve Gordon will give live painting demonstrations. Local musicians Nina Storey, Carolyn's Mother and The Ryan Tracy Band will also perform. Guests will be able to sample food and spirits from such local eateries as Sushi Redi, Fado Irish Pub and Mattie's House of Mirrors. Cigar lovers will also be able to puff on smokes from Havana's Fine Cigars. This night of decadence starts at 8 pm and runs until 1 am The $40 tickets include entry, food and spirits, and can be purchased at www.ticketweb.com --EB Sunday March 4, 2001 You won't need your kilt for the progressive Celtic band, Seven Nations, at the Fox Theater tonight. With their mixture of American rock-n-roll and Highland Celtic music, Seven Nations is a truly ground-breaking group of musicians. On tour more than 275 days a year, the band knows how to put on a good show, so get on up to Boulder for this 8 pm all ages show. Tickets are $15.75 and available at the Fox Theatre box office at 303-447- 1545 or www.ticketmaster.com --EB Monday March 5, 200 Every Monday night there's at least one crowded bar downtown: Sancho's Broken Arrow. Why Sancho's? Is it because Kitty's customers need a weekly dose of hippie decor to recouperate from a weekend of adult entertainment? Is it due to some killer happy hour with special mushrooms on the bar instead of beer nuts? No, it's the East Colfax All-Stars, a conglomerate of local improvisational musicians who jam for hours on end to the tune of a $1 cover charge. --CJM Tuesday March 6, 2001
As the venerable Madonna once said, you've got to express yourself, hey, hey. That's the whole point of Expressions Night at Noa-Noa Espresso & News (off Hwy. 93 at Canyon Point). From 5 pm to 7 pm tonight, it's anyone's chance to shine. All talents are welcomed and encouraged. Let everyone know just how great a bagpipe prodigy you really are. It's entirely free to participate, though you might pay with a little of your pride. --EB Wednesday March 7, 2001 Throw away the nicotine patches and the beer. You won't need any cheap substitutions for the natural high supplied by Robert Bradley's Blackwater Surprise. In this time of boy bands and midriff baring pop queens, there's still a group that gets down to the marrow of music with great blues riffs and warm lyrics. This group plays for the sheer love of the music. They met when the blind Bradley, sitting below the studio window, heard the other band members performing. He introduced himself, and after a fantastic jam session, the guys knew they had found a winning combination. Get an ear-ful of their soulful blues melodies tonight at 9 pm at the Fox Theatre in Boulder. Tickets are $15. --EB Thursday March 8, 2001 Johnny Socko, always a crowd favorite, will be gracing the stage of Barkley's West (620 Main St., Frisco) at 9 pm tonight. Catch their patented blend of ska punk beats and playful lyrics. They will be performing songs off of their new album, Quatro, as well as old favorites such as "I Like Cows" and "Dancing Queen." --EB Friday March 9, 2001 I've spent the entire year mistrusting the Shooting Gallery Film Series. I mean, how could a festival sponsored by Blockbuster, Starz/ Encore, Entertainment Weekly, and Polo Jeans actually benefit independent film? Well, it turns out the folks at Shooting Gallery have done a bang-up job bringing films that normally don't make it outside New York and Los Angeles to little ol' Denver. Now it's our job to support it, and keep 'em coming. Tonight, at the UA Pavilions, Shooting Gallery screens When Brendan Met Trudy, a film by legendary Irish author Roddy Doyle about movie lovers trying to have movie love in real life. --CJM Saturday March 10, 2001 Grab your bodhran and get ready for some craic at the Mile High Hooley tonight. Enjoy the Irish and Scottish dancing. Thrill to the sounds of some of America's favorite Celtic musicians-- including Solas, which was recently described by The Boston Herald as "the best traditional Irish band in the world"-- while snacking on some authentic Celtic snacks. The Hooley is being held at the Temple Events Center, and will run from noon until midnight. All ages are wel-come, but after 10 pm those under 21 must be accompanied by an adult. --Alex Neth Sunday March 11, 2001 Think up an excuse to miss work tomorrow, because you'll want to go out tonight to catch The Mother Hips at the Soiled Dove. In celebration of the release of its new album, The Green Hills of Earth, this California-based band will give Denver a taste of earthy-pop grooves. Doors open at 8 pm and the 21 and over show starts at 9 pm --EB Monday March 12, 2001 Chicago blues legend Buddy Guy doesn't just go with the flow. His tunes mix the best of hard rock, gentle balladry and electronica influence, while keeping the heart and soul of blues intact in every note. To experience the delightful phe-nomenon for yourself, get up to the Boulder Theater tonight for a live demon-stration. Guy will be performing tunes off of his latest album, Heavy Love. The show starts at 7:30 pm Tickets are $27.50 and available online at www.ticketmaster.com --EB Tuesday March 13, 2001 If you liked The Grateful Dead, then you'll probably like Dark Star Orchestra. At least, you should. Dark Star's claim to musical fame is re-creating classic Dead shows from years past, right down to the mistakes and flubbed lyrics. While the Orchestra's talent is undeniable, there is something a little spooky about sober, middle-aged people musically impersonating whacked-out young junkies. Catch them at the Fox Theater tonight and March 14. --AN Wednesday March 14, 2001 Weezer tonight, go to the Fillmore. We all remember the giddy pop band Weezer with campy lyrics and nostalgic music videos. Too bad tonight's show is sold out. When you get to the Fillmore, go around to the side of the building and press your ear up against the delivery door. You might look like an idiot, but it's free of charge. --EB
