Get Out!

Thursday March 29, 2001

You know you're just gonna end up on East Colfax anyway. So, in the immortal words of drunken golfer John Daly, why fight it? Stop by Quixote's True Blue at 10 pm and spin your ass off to the musical stylings of Chicago's Mr. Blotto. Expect lots of hippieness, but if you're going to this show, you knew that already. Five bucks gets you in, and be 21 or over-- this is still a bar, after all. --Alex Neth

Spin magazine's secondmost influential music group of the year, Outkast, plays the Fillmore tonight for $31.75 for anyone with a driver's license. (Sorry 15 yearolds-- learner's permits not accepted. And what are you doing reading this magazine anyway?) --Chris J. Magyar

Tonight's show at the Gothic is surefire-- Opie Gone Bad is always guaranteed to get beerbesotted white guys jumping up and down, but the real treat is opener Xiren, whose crafty songs and alien voice are impressively professional. The funk doesn't hurt either. Tickets are only $8. --CJM

Here at GoGo, we get a lot of privileged information that isn't intended for publication. Until now, we've been very good about not printing the unprintable, but this one's too good to keep secret. Tonight, underground band Fugazi will be playing a special semiprivate show at 969 Broadway for approximately 200 people. The doors open promptly at midnight to anyone who knows the password, which we really can't print here ... but we will say the password will be obvious once you get to the location. Remember, you didn't hear it from us! --CJM

Just in case you are up Boulder way and need to listen to some free-form jazz jamming (In that neighborhood? No way...), drop in at the Wolf Tongue Brewery in Nederland to catch the improvisational strains of Nederland Acid Jazz. The four year-old group features an ever-changing roster of musicians, and has played host to members of some of the region's best jam bands. Grab a beer, have an ear, and remember-- it's free. --AN

Bela Fleck has been strumming that bluegrass music for what seems like a month of Sundays. Accompanied by the Flecktones, Bela will get down at the Paramount Theater tonight for a genuine hootenanny. Bring the kids, bring the family-- the accessible Fleck always provides some good clean fun (as long as he lost those cage dancers). --AN

If you like Dave Matthews-- and you probably do, since just about freakin' everyone does-- you should love his occasional collaborator Tim Reynolds. Reynolds and his guitar are going to be appearing in good ol' Fort Collins for an acoustic show at the Starlight Lounge tonight, so bring your ear for easygoing jam bandlite and a shovel to move all of the adoring fans. Be older than 21, because they serve-- gasp-- alcohol. --AN

What you need is a digital movie by a Polish artist named Zbigniew Dowgiello. And it just so happens that you're in luck: there's one playing tonight at the Rocky Mountain College of Art and Design. It's called Apocalypse, and it doesn't even require expensive cybernetic eye implants to watch. Dowgiello, who recently joined the animation faculty at RMCAD, will also discuss "the role a computer artist can play in shaping our future vision of the universe at large." Weighty. Hop on down and experience the gradual development of your future computer overlords. --AN

Legendary '60s artist Peter Max will be on hand to mingle with the crowd at Gallery One from noon to 2 p. m. today. Last time Max was in town, we mingled with him, and you can find the result online at www.gogomagazine.com/0208/petermax.html Max's hypercommercial art hasn't toned down a shade in decades of work ... he's just as vibrant and wealthy as ever. --CJM

Capoeira is a kind of Brazilian dancemartial art hybrid and is immensely interesting to watch. So come watch some, will you? You have a golden opportunity tonight at the Dairy Center for the Arts in Boulder, at the annual Capoeira Batizado (Batizado is Portugese for a community gathering). It'll cost you $10, but you'll get to see people leaping and spinning without the help of wires. Thank the good folks of Canto do Galo Capoeira group for putting this event together. --AN

Another coastal trend finally finds its way to Denver, as Club Pure opens its doors at 7 am for a "recovery party" featuring a full bar and music by DJ Kostas. Well, not today, exactly, but select Sundays starting April 15. Use this Sunday as a chance to get used to drinking at sunrise after partying all night, and you'll get a flavor of what hardcore party kids in NYC and San Francisco do on the Sabbath. Cover charge will be $7. --CJM

Will Billy Joel and Elton John hug on stage? Find out at the Pepsi Center tonight. It will only cost you an arm, a leg, and your soul, as this show sold out almost as long ago as Joel's music. --CJM

Sometimes you just want to get some. Sex. It's out there, tonight, at 1949 Market St. where Fornication: A Sexual Masquerade will light your erotic fire and tempt your tummy with the taste of nuts and honey. This is a 25andolder event (21 to 25 at the gatemaster's discretion) with a $12 cover charge ($ 7 if you come in masquerade attire). Live bands will include Vox Demon'na, Lost Network, and a special surprise sexy female vocalist. Seduction chambers will be open all night for those who can't hold it in any longer. A contest for the most revealing yet classy outfit will climax at midnight. Esoteric Fashions will provide jewelry for you to hook your leash into. "You can't judge a book by its cover, so let's take the covers off." Fight the puritan power and, for once in your celibate life, get some. --CJM
