Slaughter. Vince Neil. Vixen. Playing
music. Together. If this is what the
Colorado State Fair is all about, I'm not
sure if I live in the most backward state of
the union, or just the one that most appreciates
camp. Hell, I don't even know who
Vixen is. And wasn't Vince Neil peddling
a clothing line on VH-1 or something like
that? Well, drive to Pueblo, if you must.

Minneapolis machine musicians Cock
E.S.P. grace the hallowed stage of the
Lion's Lair tonight at 10 pm with
Denver's own Page 27 and In Ether. I can
think of no better recommendation for
going than the one printed in the band's
own press release: "Cock E.S.P. 's notoriously
short and violent set is always
entertaining, but it will be especially
comical and absurd in the confined space
of The Lair's stage." Tickets are $4 at the
door. Front row seats no extra charge.

Boulder's own Tulagi hosts the rowdy
and always ready-to-party CU men's a
cappella gang, In The Buff. If this year's
incarnation is anything like the lineup of
two years ago, prepare to see some hard
rocking singers winning your hearts
before slipping off to a Jagermeister and
Goldschlager filled evening of binge partying,
University of Colorado style.

It's easy to be an extra this week. (Just

fans of Xiren are invited to The Soiled
Dove for a chance to be an extra in the
music video for "Summer of Love" off
his new album Bullets & Rainbows.
Admission is free, the bar is open, and all
you gotta do is act like you're having the
time of your life-- gee, sounds like most
Monday night bar experiences.

Such an intimate place for a such a grand
player ... tonight's outing at the Little
Bear in Evergreen is one of the shows on
Tab Benoit's perpetual tour schedule that
should not be missed. As a young blues-man,
Benoit knows he can stand up and
play emotionally within the cool,
restrained manner of so many blues players.
Born in Baton Rouge and familiar
with all the ins and outs of steamy
Southern Louisiana, Benoit's Cajun rock-n-blues has hit home with the nation's
blues audiences and even earned him TV
airtime on "Party of Five," "Melrose
Place" and "Northern Exposure."

Worth it at any price.

It's Friday night. You could go to some
bar and fight through a crowd of martini-swigging,
tie-wearing corporate types, or
you could let the bohemian come out in
you and spend happy hour at Gallery 13.
Tonight, as every non-opening night,
Gallery 13 at 1215 E. 13th Ave. presents
Unwind. This happy-hour series features
and open mic, food, music from DJ Noel
Zancanella, no stuffed shirts and, of
course, art.

Say the word 'MUFON'. Now say the
word 'rod'. Feeling ridiculous yet?
Getting stared at? If you feel just fine and
don't mind the staring, head on out to
Ken Caryl Ranch Community Park and
go skyfishing (another silly word) for
rods, a phenomenon considered to be
linked closely to UFO activity and other
nutjobbery. What is a rod? It's something
four inches to a few feet in length, covered
with a thin membrane, which flies
about in the air at speeds not detectable to
the human eye (but easily captured by
weird people with slo-mo functions on
their camcorders). FOX is producing a
special on this, of course. Head over from
11 am to 6 p. m to meet Jose Escamilla,
the anchor of this FOX special, and several
members of MUFON (Mutual UFO
Network), who will try to take $30 from
you in return for a subscription to a no
doubt silly monthly journal. The truth is
out there ... in the suburbs.

Want to be an extra in Frank Rich's new
film Modern Drunkard? Show up at the
Bluebird Theatre today around 11:30 am
and dress like you're going to an AA
meeting. Remember, this is not a anti-drinking
film, rather it's pro-drinking, so
roll out of bed and bring your hangover!
Don't worry, we'll call Jesus and make an
excuse for why you missed church today.

The Arvada Center's latest blockbuster
show, Honoring the Sky, takes place all
this month and into October and
November. The show investigates the
notions of afterlife among various world
cultures, and how those myths affect art.
The Denver Museum of Nature and
Science is also involved. Curator Susan
Sagara is hosting a gallery talk on the
exhibit today from 10 am to noon,
which is free to anyone. A perfect excuse
to take a long, early lunch and learn
something new for once.

You've heard of dollar movies? Well, the
flicks are only 50 cents tonight at Tiffany
Plaza 6 Theatres (7400 E. Hampden
Ave.). They'll even show you the whole
movie. Bring your quarters and a cheap
date. And drink beforehand ... the bars on
Hampden are nothing to write home
about.

If the term "psychobilly" isn't enough to
get you out of the house this evening,
then maybe the Reverand Horton
Heat's reputation for a wild and woolly
live show will. Out in support of the latest
record, Spending a Night in the Box,
the Dallas native will no doubt drink,
curse, and careen his band through a raucous
set of get-up-and-dance rock tunes
tonight at the Boulder Theater with
Nashville Pussy. Watch for bass player
antics and flying bodies. Perhaps this is
the true meaning behind "Don't mess
with Texas."
