Matthew Schultz

October Theatre Best Bets for under $20

Coyote on a Fence

Now Showing
Thursdays, Fridays & Saturdays at 8 pm
Acoma Center
1080 Acoma Street, Denver
303-623-2349

Currently playing at the Acoma Center is the play Coyote on a Fence. This play is a deeper exploration of the death penalty debate in America and stars local talent Gene Gillete. Coyote on a Fence is produced by Curious Theatre Company and is under the apt direction of one of Denver's finest directors, Chip Walton.

Curious Theatre company has proven themselves to be one of the "big dogs" in Denver theatre in recent years with their much acclaimed productions of Praying for Rain, Fences and Paula Vogel's How I Learned to Drive. Coyote on a Fence appears to be the next play that Curious may add to their list of Denver theatre hits.

Sylvia

Now Showing
Fridays & Saturdays at 8 pm
Avenue Theatre
2119 East 17th Avenue, Denver
303-321-5925

One local theatre that has always been able to make audiences roar with laughter is the small, 100 seat venue called the Avenue Theatre. Their current project is the hysterical play Sylvia. It is an imaginative romp that focuses on a New York couple who find that their lives are changed when a stray dog is brought into the household. The dog, Sylvia, is portrayed by a human actor and audiences get a chance to get inside the thought process of mans' best friend.

Sylvia had an incredibly successful run at the Denver Center for Performing Arts several years ago but may prove to be even more loveable in such an intimate theatre.

Here/After

Now Showing
Fridays and Saturdays at 8 pm
Bug Theatre
3654 Navajo Street
303-477-5977

The Bug Theatre Company was named Best Theatre Company by Go-Go Magazine last year and also received several acting nods from Go-Go for Bug company members. This month the BuG unveils Here/After the first show in their 2001-2002 season. Guest director Mare Trevathan Philpott, Bug resident Jennifer French and cast utilize the Viewpoints method of acting to create an original Bug work.

Here/After combines text, images, music and movement to explore the medium of theatre and present a "vibrant montage that explores life, death, and the rituals that bind us together." The Bug Theatre continues to electrify local audiences with their pioneering productions and are exposing Denver to an exciting new theatre format. Hats off to BTC for bringing a breath of fresh air to the Denver stage.

Never the Sinner Opening Oct. 17 Fridays and Saturdays at 7: 30 p. m. Theatre on Broadway 13 S. Broadway 303-860-9360

Nick Sugar directs Theatre on Broadway's upcoming production of Never the Sinner. The play tells the story of Leopold and Loeb and their infamous murder trial in the 1920's. This gripping tale is told in a series of flashes and events from prior to the murder through their trial. The script is strong and so is Sugar's vision.

He has formed an ensemble of superb local actors, many of whom have become TOB favorites with audiences. Sugar was named Best Director last year by Go-Go magazine and also received honors for Best Ensemble for his production of Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet. So, as with all of Sugar's work, Never the Sinner is an event not to miss.
