Get a Fusion Life

Fusion Life showcases local artists, fashion designers, jewelry makers and DJs. There is also an inter net cafe where people can lose themselves in cyberspace. A little over a month old, this distinctive boutique located at 2019 E. Colfax has brought Denver a fusion of creativity. Heidi Hanley and Dave McKernan started the business together. Hanley chooses the clothing, jewelry, shoes and bags to sell in the boutique, while McKernan handles the DJs and internet cafe.

"The idea for the boutique started about a year ago and it took us about 7 months to find the location," Hanley said. "You will find a compilation of creative things--clothing, music, art and communication."

The clothing prices are very reasonable, ranging from $20-$125. Hanley selects clothing for customers who are "somewhat sophisticated, but also enjoying wearing funky, fun clothing for going out." The women's line of clothing consists of sexy tasseled dresses in dark purples and patterned pinks by Hot Sauce, a wool school girl skirt by Lucent that can be matched with a soft charcoal turtle neck sweater, pinstriped pants with an oriental silk lace-up tube top outfit and a gorgeous reversible faux fur, velvety jacket. "I am really careful to select lines of clothing that surrounding boutiques do not carry," Hanley said.

The men's line has been slower to arrive but Fusion Life currently offers sweaters, T-shirts and pants. There are also army jackets and handsome long sleeved shirts by ILLIG and Elee. Fusion Life is also featuring a local fashion designer team called GRAE that includes a selection of industrial-punk T-shirts for men and women. There is also a full line of men's and women's vintage clothing that a local woman, Dana Sparks, buys for the boutique.

Artists who are interested in displaying work can drop off samples of their clothing, music, jewelry or art. "We are open to all designers and we really will give people a chance if the pieces go with our store," Hanley said. Along the walls are vibrant paintings that are for sale by local artists. The local artist currently featured, Julie Havel, is selling beautiful pieces such as "Retro Blocks" and "Blue Water," "Acrylic and Sand."

Another exceptional aspect of this boutique is the dedication to giving back to the customers and the community. "We want to make people feel really comfortable by treating each person who visits with the same respect. I believe if we give to people it will come back around." Every Saturday Fusion Life features a local DJ from 3 pm-5 pm. There are turntables provided and the music featured runs the gamut of electronic beats.

Great holiday gift ideas that are inexpensive include: blown glass pendants, blown glass roses and fish, funky sunglasses, local DJ MLE's CD or COLOREVOLUTION--make-up, hair highlighter and shimmering tan.
